The Magic of Making Something from Nothing | Sean W. Malone

Every act of creativity starts with a seemingly impossible challenge: How do you take nothing and, through the alchemy of craft and imagination, turn it into something incredible?

Even now, as I begin to write this essay, I’m staring at a blank screen wondering what to write.

We all face this challenge every time we put pen to paper, brush to canvas, or hands to keyboard. An unformed block of clay can become anything we want it to be, but how do we decide what shape it should take? How do we decide what to create?

At the heart of unformed creativity lies an infinite array of possibilities, and for most of us, that’s equally exhilarating and terrifying.

What if my ideas are bad? What if they’re good ideas but I don’t have enough skill to execute them? What if, after I’ve given everything I’ve got to create something I really love, everybody else hates it?

What if, what if, what if…?

Success as a creator takes a willingness to push past our fears, find confidence in our own imagination, and develop our craft by putting in the work.
